Five Big Wins for Gun Owners In House Spending Votes

Friday, July 15, 2011

This week, the House of Representatives Appropriations Committee approved amendments blocking the use of federal funds to implement two controversial schemes by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and it rejected amendments proposing two of gun control groups’ other top priorities.  In addition, the full House adopted a provision protecting gun possession on Army Corps of Engineers land.
First, on Wed. July 13, by a vote of 25 to 16, the committee approved Rep. Denny Rehberg’s (R-Mont.) amendment to the 2012 Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies appropriations bill, prohibiting the BATFE from requiring firearm dealers in states bordering Mexico to file reports on certain rifle sales. The Justice Department had announced earlier in the week that the BATFE would soon begin requiring dealers to file the reports on individuals who buy two or more detachable-magazine semi-automatic rifles larger than .22 caliber within a period of five business days.
“For more than a decade, efforts to track rifle purchases and create a national gun registry have failed to gain support in Congress, so the ATF is working to implement these regulations using rules written by unelected bureaucrats,” Rep. Rehberg said. "I'm going to keep this government accountable to the people."

By a vote of 28-19, the committee also approved Rep. John Carter’s (R-Texas) amendment to stop BATFE from prohibiting the importation of shotguns that have one or more various features disliked by the BATFE, most of which are common to firearms used for protection or sport. Such features include adjustable stocks and extended magazine tubes. Rep. Carter, like Rep. Rehberg, is a member of the Congressional Sportsmen’s Caucus, and believes that “federal gun regulations often create burdens for law-abiding citizens and infringe upon constitutional rights provided by the Second Amendment.”

Next, in a Thurs. July 14 voice vote on the House floor, the House adopted an amendment to the Energy and Water Appropriations bill (H.R. 2354—which passed the House on July 15) prohibiting expenditures to enforce the Army Corps of Engineers regulation that bans gun possession on the 11 million acres of land and water the Corps manages.  The amendment, sponsored by Reps. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.), Bob Gibbs (R-Ohio) and Jason Altmire (D-Pa.) will enhance self-defense rights for law-abiding Americans who hunt, camp and fish on Corps property.  (Rep. Gibbs, joined by the other lawmakers, has previously sponsored H.R. 1865, the "Recreational Lands Self-Defense Act," to overturn the Corps' anti-gun rule.)  Commenting on the amendment, Rep. Altmire noted, "It is important for sportsmen to be able to defend themselves while they legally hunt and fish on property that the Corps owns and operates, much of which is in rural areas without adequate law enforcement."

Though none of these votes settle the respective issuesthe pro-gun amendments will still have to pass the Senate, and more anti-gun amendments are always possibleall are setbacks for gun control supporters who had been encouraged by talk of the Obama administration planning to bypass Congress and implement a variety of gun control schemes “under the radar.” The Brady Campaign also hoped the rifle sales reports requirement would be followed by a new “assault weapon” ban and a law prohibiting private sales of firearms, the latter of which President Obama alluded to in March.

Handguns for Self Defense - Better than Sharp Sticks

Most times, the short barrel is going to have to answer the call

Handguns are very popular for self-defense in the United States. There are a variety of reasons for this, many of which have to do with convenience. While we all recognize that a 12-gauge shotgun is probably better at stopping an assailant, how easy is it to tote one around all day?

In 2009 alone, more than 4.5 million handguns were manufactured and imported into the US.  While many of these firearms were sold to collectors and shooters for various sports, I would argue that many, if not most, were sold to people for defensive use.
There is a problem with handguns that many people don’t know about: they stink on ice for actually stopping an attacker.

Stopping Power

Hold on, before you tar and feather me, I am not saying that handguns aren’t used thousands of times every year to successfully stop an attack. They are.

What I am saying is when shooting a determined attacker, pistols aren’t very good when compared with other firearms.  Pistols lack the fabled “stopping power” to instantly drop a would-be felon in his tracks.

There are a lot of different theories on stopping power out there. I’ve read through the arguments for most of them. Some of the authors viciously attack the authors of differing theories, while others present reasonable arguments for their beliefs.  However, there is one thing that they all uniformly agree on: long guns, shotguns and rifles, are vastly superior to handguns when it comes to stopping an attacker.

Why is a long gun better than a handgun? A lot of things go into the possible answer, but fundamentally, the long gun just does more damage to the attacker’s body. The more damage that is done, the less likely the attacker will have the ability to harm you.

Ok…so what?

It should be obvious that handguns are inferior tools for stopping a violent attack when compared to a rifle or shotgun.  I think most people would readily agree.

Removing the long gun from the comparison, some people suddenly believe the handgun is the magic tool that will stop all attackers in a single shot or two.

Ever hear the old line that shooting someone in the pinky with a (insert favorite load/caliber here) will instantly drop an attacker? It is total bovine fecal matter, yet I hear it all too frequently on Internet gun forums and in local gun shops.

Consider these cases involving various handgun calibers, all considered good for self defense by most people:

 - Officers from my department respond to a reported suicide. A man took a popular-brand pistol, put it to his head and pulled the trigger. Fortunately, the gun did not kill the man. In fact, the man’s only complaint while riding to the hospital was of a headache.

 - In another Florida incident, an elderly man and his wife were returning to their home after grocery shopping. As they started to enter the home, an armed robber attacked them. The elderly man was able to get his handgun and shoot the attacker.

When shot, the robber went down. The victim then set down his handgun to call 911.  Unfortunately, the handgun bullet had not been effective, and the robber grabbed the victim’s gun and killed the elderly man with it.

 - A South Carolina trooper stopped a man for a traffic violation along the Interstate one night.  Unknown to the trooper, the man was transporting drugs and was armed.

In an ensuing confrontation, the trooper shot the man with his service revolver five times, striking center mass with each bullet. Not only did the man survive, but all five bullets failed to incapacitate him. The felon drew his own pistol and killed the trooper.

In all of these cases, I have no doubt the results would have been different if a long gun was used instead of a handgun.

What’s a Pistol Owner to Do?
This article is not intended to dissuade anyone from buy and and using a handgun or self-defense.  I encourage every responsible American to own and learn how to use a handgun.  Part of what you should learn, however, is that the gun is neither a magic talisman nor a Star Trek phaser.  You need to learn its limitations, and how to mitigate those limits.

Shot placement - There are no guarantees that a bullet will work, but putting them into vital areas increases your likelihood of success.  Most instructors will tell you to aim for center mass, which is the area of the chest where the heart and lungs reside.

Shots to center mass are unlikely to immediately drop an attacker, but they will cause massive bleeding.  Other than a shot to the brain or spinal cord, bleeding and the resultant drop in blood pressure is what will incapacitate an attacker.  Shots to the extremities are unlikely to produce enough bleeding to quickly render someone unable to hurt you.

Volume of fire - Ever see the movie Zombieland?  Rule #2 is “Double Taps.”  The same thought about zombies applies to self-defense:  when your life is endangered, don’t get stingy with the bullets.

If one shot to center mass is likely to generate enough bleeding to stop an attack, it should be clear that two shots are even more likely.  Three, four and 15 shots to center mass all increase the likelihood the attacker will not be able to hurt you and your family.

Firearms trainers used to teach police officers two rapid shots to center mass of an assailant, and then assess if you should resume shooting. I don’t think this is the best way to defend yourself, and prefer the advice retired Detroit Police Department cop Evan Marshal once gave: “Continue shooting until your sight picture is degraded by a lack of target.”

Buy a Handgun
The intent of this article is to get you to think more realistically about your pistol or revolver.  It can be an effective self-defense weapon, but it has limitations. Learn to work around those limitations and you will be much more likely able to survive a violent encounter.

However, when given the choice between a long gun and a pistol, consider the paraphrased advice of trainer Clint Smith: The handgun is what you use to fight your way back to the shotgun or rifle you shouldn’t have left behind in the first place.

Cut, Cap, Balance.

I want to see the Cut, Cap, Balance bill/amendment be signed into law. It is obvious that many, if not most, politicians will not responsibly handle our finances otherwise. Cut spending each year. Cap spending at a percentage of GDP LOWER than the current rate, and reduce that cap YEARLY until it is under 15%. Pass a balanced budget Amendment. No more false promised of spending cuts a decade away, ignored by that future congress. No more threatening our seniors and soldiers when government excess and waste abounds. No more tax hikes to fund irresponsible spending. Cut, Cap, Balance.

2011 Mini cooper SD - the EPA is stupid!

http://www.cardotcom.com/mini/2011-mini-cooper-sd/

The EPA is saving our environment by NOT letting us drive the new 54mpg (yes USA miles per gallon) Mini Cooper SD. Way to go, as if we needed more proof that government is the worst solution to any problem. When are we going to get rid of these incompetent fools telling us, supposedly free Americans, how we can live our lives?

Ran across the new Mini while researching a 4bt swap. (That's a 3.9 liter turbo diesel engine made by Cummins for those not automotively inclined) The idiots at the EPA will end up getting another 24mpg old diesel on the road instead of a 54mpg new one.

Where govenment has it wrong.

Democrats make great examples. If you have no job, we will reward you with "free" money. If you have a job, we will punish you with taxes. If you are successful, we'll punish you some more. Don't even think about about wealthy, we'll cut you legs out from under you.
That mentality is backwards in so many ways, but mainly in the choice of punishment of success, rather than reward. Capitalism rewards hard work, thereby encouraging it. Capitalism rewards innovation, competition, and efficiency. All of these are absent or nearly so in government.
The other downfall of government's punishing mentality is freedom, intentionally on the part of some. If you are encouraged to get a degree, through grants for example, you may do so, but you are not discouraged from taking up a trade if that's where you passion or skills lie. Whereas if you are punished, with taxes perhaps, for not making a given choice a percentage of people will be forced to make that choice, limiting their freedom, increasing market inefficiencies, lowering GDP, and Americans standard of living.

Or more succintly, That government is best which governs least. Thoreau/Paine Et al.

Hollywood mocks capitalism shallowly.

The shocking truth comes out: Ideas create jobs and wealth, not government.

Once again Obama says Americans are just too stupid to listen to.

(CNSNews.com) - At a White House press conference today, President Barack Obama said that "professional politicians" understand the debt crisis better than "the public."
Obama was responding to a question from CBS News Reporter Chip Reid. “The latest CBS News poll showed that only 24 percent of Americans said that you should raise the debt limit to avoid an economic catastrophe," said Reid. "There’s still 69 percent who oppose raising the debt limit. So, is it the problem that you and others have failed to convince the American people that we have a crisis here and how are you going to change that?”
Condensed: 70% of Americans totally disagree with Obama's (wrong) opinion, so WE must be ignorant, and he's just going to ram it down our stupid throats anyway. Oh, how I love my federal government. When is the next election? 4 years is way too long to put up with this idiocy.

The weasel mailing is too funny to resist.

Way to go Boehner! Republicans are starting to represent Americans again. Use "tell congress" to show your reps your support.

Obama says it’s time to "eat our peas"

Obama says it’s time to "eat our peas" and pass the debt deal.
So now raising taxes in a recession and even more debt spending with record deficits is likened to a wholesome meal and people who actually understand economics and refuse are only silly children who won’t eat their veggies?
Let’s get it right. Taxes in a recession and even more deficit spending by an irresponsible federal government with record debts is more like stuffing a morbidly obese person’s freezer with ice cream. You don’t throw on more of the same old problem, you eliminate the bad habits(deficit spending), start new good habits (balanced budget), and exercise(reduce taxes and deregulate) to get you body(economy) back in shape. Wake up America, throw this reckless bum out!

This is the only gun control we need.

What more needs be said?

Obama's Amnesty for Illegals

Just a banner week for America. Seeing you election chances slipping away? Import voters by the millions. Nullify those nasty conservative southern states.

Finally, Obama's plan on job creation... ummm, nope. My mistake, it's Obama's cost of living reduction plan... no, not that either. Obama's government budget reduction... oh, I give up!
"EPA Coal Decision Levels Playing Field for Wind, Solar" Ha, no kidding. All you have to do to make solar and wind power "economical" is to tax and then outlaw all of the competition that makes cheaper energy. Wait... don't we have laws against collusion, monopolies, and... Oh, I forgot. Federal government is above the law, whether constitutional or of it's own creation.

Up and running.

Up and running. If only there were another 24 hours in a day.
