DOT Employees Build Castles With Canned Food Donations

(CNSNews.com) - Employees at the U.S. Department of Transportation are not only collecting canned food for the needy -- they're playing with it, too.
As part of the third annual "Feds Feed Families" food drive, the DOT said it hopes to collect at least 58,100 pounds of food to donate to food pantries and shelters in the Washington area.
This year, said the DOT blog, "We’ve raised the stakes by hosting an exciting intra-agency competition to see which agency can collect the most food.
"And it doesn’t stop there. Last week, we held our annual Can Castle Competition, where teams from each DOT agency have three hours to build the most creative structure using donated food."

This year’s winner, built by a team from DOT’s Federal Railroad Administration, used 6,000 food items to portray train tracks running through a canned-corn landscape.

“Pretty impressive,” LaHood said. “Regardless of which intra-agency team wins each year, these donations remind us of how fortunate many of us are, and how important it is to help those who are struggling,” he added.
LaHood praised President and Mrs. Obama for calling attention to the "very real issue of hunger" in America.  “I’m proud to see the tremendous generosity of the DOT family and the entire Federal workforce,” he said.
The 2011 federal employees' food drive, which runs through the end of August, has set a goal of collecting two million pounds of food overall.

And if he did, at today's press conference he wanted you to know that it is a shared responsibility between the parties because the Republicans hold the House of Representatives.

Pay no attention to Democrat claims that the GOP really had no power and how dare they act like they did during the debt ceiling debate.


Barack Obama wants no blame for the economic mess we are in.

Truth be told, economies are cyclical. They go up. They go down. Presidents have very little control over economies. But, Presidential policies can mitigate, prolong, or exacerbate economic cycles. That's what we are seeing with Barack Obama and his policies.

The Obama stimulus failed to create private sector jobs. In fact, a bevy of economists who have looked into it have determined the stimulus may have created public sector jobs, but killed off private sector jobs. Today's jobless numbers come in better than expected, but it has more to do with people no longer looking for work than people finding jobs.

The vital signs for the economy are weak. And in the present environment, Barack Obama and his advisors are left to explain that if the government stops spending the economy will collapse. Their excuse is like that of an alcoholic who proclaims that if he cannot have just one more drink, the liquor market will collapse.

Barack Obama has become Jimmy Carter faster than Carter became Carter.

Fannie Mae wants another 5.1 billion. I have a better idea. Let’s get the government crooks out of the housing market. Ponder, if you will, where we would be at now without government insistence on subprime lending. The liberal media and democrats can demonize the banks all day long, but questionable lending was ordered by those same democrats in congress.

Obama turns 50. In the current economic crisis what does he do? Fundraise, go back on the campaign trail, bash Bush, and blame republicans.  It’s amazing how Bush, who left the whitehouse in 2008, is still holding Obama down. And the republicans, who haven’t had control of the congress since 2006, are still holding Obama back. Is Obama the president, or a professional victim? Whether he admits it or not, this is the Obama economy. This is what happens when you tax, spend, and grow government like never before.

Not only are the Tea Party Patriots to the right of the republican party, they are just plain right.

“The Tea Party Patriots said in a statement that the bill that was the basis for the final deal "will not eliminate the deficit" and "will still risk a downgrade of our credit rating.” The Tea Party may be the only political party that understands economics. How refreshing!
